Many parents are cautious about putting their children on a school bus.  Contrary to what they may believe, school buses are one of the safest forms of transportation on the road today. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, riding a bus to school is 13 times safer than riding in a passenger vehicle and 10 times safer than walking. The fact is, more children are hurt outside the bus than inside, either hit by the bus or by motorists illegally passing a stopped bus.  Your preferred auto shop can address these safety concerns in further detail.

Since area schools are back in session, school bus safety should be a top priority for all drivers.  Here's a refresher course from an auto center on school bus safety laws:

  • All 50 states require that traffic in both directions stop on undivided roadways when students are entering or exiting a school bus. State laws may vary on what is required on a divided roadway, but in all cases, traffic behind the bus (traveling in the same direction) must stop.
  • The 10 feet area surrounding a school bus is considered a space where children are in the most danger of being hit. Allow more than the minimum amount of space for children to safely enter and exit the bus.
  • Stay alert when you come upon a school bus as children can be unpredictable. They usually feel safe in the place where they're getting on or off the bus, but they may get distracted or are unaware of dangerous situations.
  • School buses use yellow flashing lights to alert drivers that they are about to stop. A red flashing light and an extended arm signal indicate that the bus is stopping to unload or load children.
  • The laws in school zones are strict and fines can be hefty. Depending on your actual speed, a ticket received in a school zone can add 3 to 6 points on your driver's license, a charge for reckless driving, and even cause you to lose your license for up to six months.
  • If you see flashing lights or signals as you approach a school zone, 25 mph is the maximum speed limit. Otherwise, drivers may travel at the posted speed limit.
  • It is illegal to pass a school bus on the right; it could have tragic consequences.
