The hot months of summer are just about over. What a relief! Summer's high temperatures may have taken their toll on your engine. Now, before the cold winter months arrive, is the time to give some extra attention to your vehicle's cooling system with a quality radiator service. This service will help guard your tired engine from overheating or other problems related to the cooling system, preventing an untimely and costly radiator repair.

Keep your vehicle's cooling system operating at peak efficiency with these 4 radiator service tips:

  1. On a regular basis, check Caps and Hoses -- If the radiator cap and water outlet cap are cracked or damaged, replace them immediately. The hoses and tubes leading from the radiator to the water pump, thermostat, and reserve tank should also be inspected frequently. Any cracks or cuts may mean leaking antifreeze. About every three to four years hoses should be replaced as they tend to get dry and brittle with age.
  2. At least once a month, check Fluid Levels -- The level of coolant in the radiator, as well as the reserve tank, should be checked and topped off as necessary. Your mechanic will know the correct mix of antifreeze coolant to add. If the levels are consistently low, a radiator repair technician can determine if there is any leaking, or if it is just evaporation.
  3. Every few months, visually check the Radiator and Reserve Tanks -- Cracks can begin as very small pinholes or punctures that can be easily repaired before they get too big. If a small hole goes unnoticed until it causes problems, you could be looking at a costly radiator repair.
  4. Every  5 years 100.000 miles with long-life coolant, 2 years 50,000 miles with standard green coolant, have a Drain and Flush -- Dirt and other contaminants build up in the cooling system. Antifreeze can become acidic and lose its effectiveness. A radiator service will determine if your radiator needs to be drained and refilled with new coolant and water. The radiator should be flushed before adding the fresh mixture to further remove dirt, contaminants, and other metal particles that may have built up, thus restricting the flow of antifreeze/coolant.
