Improper vehicle operation is caused by many things, one of the most critical being transmission problems. There are many symptoms of failure with a number of possible causes, some needing a minor transmission service, while others require more extensive transmission repair.
Below is a list of the most common symptoms of failure leading to a necessary transmission repair:
- "Check Engine" Light On–Dashboard light alerts you of a pending problem.
- Unusual Noises–coming from under the hood or rear of the car (a hum or low whine, clicking, knocking, screeching, buzzing, whistling, clanking, or grating).
- "Slow Response"–When the vehicle is cold, it won't move, or it shifts late during the first few minutes of operation.
- Slipping–Engine races, but the vehicle moves slowly or won't accelerate as it should.
- Stalling–The vehicle stalls or labors on takeoff, repeatedly over a short period of time.
- No Response– When the shift lever is placed in Drive, nothing happens, even while racing the engine.
- No Reverse–Shift lever does not engage in Reverse.
- Leaks–stains or pools under the vehicle.
- Loss of Power–The passing gear doesn't engage when the accelerator is pressed to the floor.
- Early or Delayed Shifting–Unexpected or sporadic shifting.
- Hard Shift Handle movement–Hard to move into or out of any position.
- Jerky Vehicle–The vehicle moves or jerks while in Park or Neutral.
- Burnt Smell–Burnt or rancid odor coming from under the hood or underneath the vehicle.
- Shift Indicator Off (P) or (N)–Shift indicator doesn't point to the proper range.
- Debris–Excessive amounts of debris or metal shavings in the transmission pan.
If your vehicle experiences any of the symptoms of transmission failure above, find a reliable transmission repair mechanic to run diagnostic testing to determine the root cause of the problem. Don't delay in taking care of the problem.
