However, if you understand what regular maintenance should be done on your car before winter, you will make sure you are driving as safe as possible through winter’s harsh temperatures and help prevent expensive repairs.
If you’re not sure when a particular vehicle maintenance issue should be taken care of, check your owner’s manual against the schedule listed below that is typically recommended by car manufacturers:
- Every 3,000 to 7,000 Miles. Depending on the type of motor oil used, change the oil and filter. Check the transmission fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid, and wipers, tires and all exterior lights at each oil change.
- Every 15,000 miles. Replace the air filter.
- Every 20,000 miles. Inspect the battery and coolant.
- Every 25,000 miles. Replace the fuel filter.
- Every 30,000 miles. Replace the air filter and power steering fluid and have the coolant, radiator hoses, HVAC system, brake pads, and all suspension components inspected.
- Every 35,000 miles. Inspect and replace the battery if it is not holding a charge or if it is at least three to four years old.
- Every 40,000 miles. Inspect the ignition and suspension systems and replace the spark plugs and wires if necessary.
- Every 60,000 miles. Replace brake pads and brake fluid, radiator hoses, coolant, power steering fluid, and timing belt. Inspect the HVAC, suspension components and tires.
In order to optimize the resale value of your car, keep a record of all maintenance and repairs performed. This record also serves as a reminder as to when the next service should be performed.
