Cannon auto repair

Unless you have taken care of some vehicle spring cleaning, you could be headed for a potential breakdown before summer is over. The dust, heat, and stop-and-go traffic can have adverse effects on your vehicle during the hot months of summer. Lessen the chance of mechanical failure with a visit to a reliable auto repair shop.

Some of the issues below you may be able to take care of yourself. Others will require a trained auto repair mechanic:

  • Oil Change -- Change your oil and filter as specified in your manual, or about every 3,000 miles if you make frequent stop-and-go trips, extended trips with lots of luggage, or tow a trailer.
  • Air Conditioning – Have your A/C system inspected by a qualified technician. A marginally operating system can give out during hot weather.
  • Cooling System – Overheating is the most common cause of summer breakdowns. The cooling system should be flushed and refilled about every 5 years or 100 thousand miles in most cases. It is a good idea to have it inspected periodically.
  • Tires -- Check the air pressure in your tires at least once a month. Examine the tread for uneven wearing and cupping, and the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. An alignment is warranted if there's uneven tread wear or if your vehicle pulls to one side. Your tires should be rotated about every 5,000 miles. Don't forget to check the spare, and be sure the jack is in good condition.
  • Engine Service -- Replace other filters (air, fuel, PCV, etc.) as recommended, and more often in dusty conditions. Engine repair problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) can be corrected at your trusted auto repair shop.
  • Brakes – Inspect the braking system as recommended in your manual. If you notice pulsations, grabbing, noises, or longer stopping distance, take care of those problems promptly.
  • Battery -- Scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; re-tighten all connections. If battery caps are removable, check the fluid level monthly. Hot weather kills batteries, so be sure to have the charging capability tested.
  • Windshield Wipers -- A dirty windshield can pose a safety hazard. Replace worn blades and have plenty of washer fluid on hand.
  • Lights -- Inspect all lights and bulbs and replace them as necessary. Make sure the lenses are free of dirt and insects.
  • Emergencies -- Carry a first aid kit, blanket, snacks, water, flares, and a flashlight.
