Contradicting an Oil Change Tradition!
What is the correct interval for oil changes? Many oil change experts and car manufacturers are now saying that holding to the 3,000-mile oil change tradition is no longer necessary. This is due to the advancement in recent years in engine technology and chemistry of oil. However, they still agree that vehicle owners should follow the recommended interval for oil changes as listed in their owner's manual. That interval could be anywhere between 5,000 and 15,000 miles, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. To be a more informed vehicle owner, take time to read your owner's manual! Of course, if your car's "oil change" light appears, it is time to schedule that oil change service.
Is an oil change service on your "things to do" list before your summer trip?
Should you have an oil change service performed right before your long road trip? Good question! Consider these two answers:
- If your vehicle will reach the mileage or time interval for the required oil change during your trip, take the time to have a service before starting out. Don't take a chance of having problems on a long stretch of road with no help in sight.
- If the time for an oil change won't occur until after your trip (be sure to include all the extra miles of driving on your trip), it won't hurt to wait until you return.
A few words to the wise:
Before starting out on your summer road trip, it is smart to have all the systems of your vehicle inspected to make sure they are all functioning properly. This could be a little risky, however! Why do you ask? Let's say that the drain plug did not get tightened properly during an oil change. Pretty soon, you will notice in your rearview mirror a trail of oil on the road as each little jolt and bump soon loosened the plug. So, plan at least a week ahead of your departure date to schedule that needed an oil change or other maintenance services to give time to notice any little mishaps that may occur.
