Auto Repair Warranties: Are they a good deal?
Were you satisfied with the last auto repair service performed on your vehicle? Did the auto repair shop offer you a warranty on the parts or labor? Understanding warranties can be confusing--there are good ones and not so good ones. Before making a decision, it's important to know what makes it a good deal, or a not so good deal.
So that you are able to make an informed decision about whether or not to purchase an extended warranty, ask your auto repair shop these three questions:
- What all is covered (or not covered)?
Read through the warranty and be sure your questions are answered to your satisfaction. Because not all warranties cover the same things, don't assume anything. For example, does it cover just the drive train or is it bumper-to-bumper? Will it cover the most common repairs that may occur? How many miles or months is it good for?
- What is the total cost?
Compare, on average, how much you spend in auto repair every year versus how much the warranty will cost you each year. Is there a deductible, and how often do you pay that? Will it be cost-effective for you?
- What are the stipulations?
Every extended warranty normally comes with a set of rules or stipulations. How stringent are the rules on the particular warranty you are being offered? Does it apply only to that particular dealer or auto repair shop? Take time to read the fine print.
Remember, check the coverage, count the cost, consider the rules, and don't forget to ask questions, before committing to an extended warranty.
