Are All Auto Repair Warranties Alike?
Understanding warranties for auto repair services can be confusing. How do you know which ones are good ones and which ones are not so good? If you are concerned about the last auto repair performed on your vehicle, asking questions and finding out the details of an offered warranty is important to you.
Here are three simple questions to ask before making a decision as to whether or not to accept the offer of an auto repair warranty:
1. What is covered, or what is not covered? Because there are so many different kinds of auto repair warranties, don’t assume you know what it covers. You may be confused as to whether the warranty covers only the parts used, or if it includes the labor. Does it cover bumper-to-bumper or just the drive train? Does it cover common auto repair services? Is it good for a certain number of miles or a certain number of months?
2. Is it cost-effective—for the long term or the short term? One way to help you make a decision is to consider the costs (on average) how much you spend in auto repair versus how much the warranty will cost you for each year. If there is a deductible, is it a one-time cost, yearly, or for each auto repair service?
3. What are the stipulations? There are generally a set of rules or stipulations that come with every extended warranty. Be sure you understand what they are for the particular warranty you are being offered. Does it apply to only a particular dealer or auto repair shop?
Caution: Take time to read through all the fine print--double-check the coverage, count the cost, and consider the rules before committing to an extended warranty for auto repair services.
